BIRDWATCHING

Zagori’s nature is part of Northern Pindos National Park and hosts a large variety of bird species. Visitors have the opportunity to observe at least 140 different bird species throughout the year. Regardless your experience level in birdwatching, you get the chance to enjoy the spectacular bird life of the area, by choosing one of the following routes:


Route 1: From Primoula to Agios Minas

Starting form the hotel, we follow a beautiful path to Agios Minas village, passing through an oak forest and open grasslands. As we hike our way towards the village, we observe and admire some forest bird species. After we reach the village, we set up our field scope between the meadows and the traditional stone alleys of the village in order to observe more birds. Following the same path back to the hotel and after we reach our destination, it is time to create a list with all the species we observed and those that we managed to photograph.

Duration: 3.5 hours

Easy route, ideal for beginners and children, due to small height deviation and short distance.

Route 2: Birdwatching from Vikos to the springs of Voidomatis River

Your opportunity to admire some of the most famous Mediterranean birds of rocky habitats this route is the best choice. Starting our tour in the traditional settlement of Vikos, we make our first stop at the observatory, overlooking the entrance of the Gorge. This is probably the best spot for photographers who wish to capture birds such as the Peregrine Falcon, the Short-toed Eagle and the Buzzard. Then, we head towards the path through the gorge and get the chance to photograph more bird species, and if we get lucky the famous Wallcreeper! We then reach our final destination, the springs of Voidomatis River, and while enjoying the scenery and the crystal clear waters, try to spot the White-throated Dipper. Following the same path, we start heading back to Vikos village.

Duration: 4 hours

The difficulty level is moderate due to some slight slopes.

Route 3: Bird-hike from Mikro Papigo to the Astraka Refuge

A tour that combines both hiking and birdwatching, in the alpine meadows of Tymphe, one of the most famous mountains in Greece and Europe.

Guests get the chance to observe more up to 60 different bird species, starting from Mikro Papingo Village and through the path to Astraka Mountains. The path through the forest leads us to spectacular scenery, at an altitude of about 1300 meters, standing beneath the imposing cliffs of Tymphe. In our final destination, the refuge of Astraka, that stands at an altitude of 1950 meters, we try to spot some of the most famous and rare bird species.

We make our way back to the Mikro Papigo village and the hotel.

Route 4: Zagori '' Bird Safari '' on four wheels

This 4x4 driving tour offers you’re the opportunity to observe the majority of birds that hide beneath the mysterious forests and geological formations of Zagori. After our first stop in Vikos village we head off to the mountains valley of Soudena, set at 800 meters above sea level. This location is ideal for observing Red-backed Shrikes, Woodchat Shrikes, Subalpine Warblers and Stonechats. Next stop is the dense oak forest of central Zagori, located between the villages of Negades and Fragades, where more bird species can be found and photographed. Then, the path leadw us to the alpine meadows of Tymphe Mountain where some more rare bird species live.

A tour that gives every guest the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of habitats that spread across the great land of Zagori.
